In a thought-provoking session held in the Solagran Hall on Monday 21st July, 2025, students of Standard IX and X were treated to an eye-opening talk on environmental issues by a distinguished resource person, our very own alumnus Dr. Kamlesh Desai, a man whose heart beats with a passion for Environmental Conservation. He was also accompanied by one of our esteemed alumnus Professor Suresh Malkani who also highlighted some critical environmental concerns that he shared from his years of experience in the field. The session aimed to deepen studentsā awareness and understanding of current ecological challenges and inspire responsible behavior towards environmental conservation.
Ā š Key Topics Discussed
Ā 1. Water- Security
Dr. Desai began by awakening our students to the contamination of water bodies from industrial runoff and household waste. Students were informed about the simple water conservation techniques that could be adopted at home and school.
Ā 2. Environmental Pollution:Ā
Professor Suresh MalkaniĀ began by framing the concept of environmental pollution in everyday terms, explaining how air, water, and soil pollution have escalated due to unchecked industrial activities, vehicular emissions, and poor waste disposal. He emphasized the ripple effect on biodiversity, human health, and climate balance.
Ā 3. Plastic Pollution:Ā
The dangers of plastic waste were elaborated with striking visuals and data. Dr. Desai highlighted that:
- Single-use plastics contribute to long-term environmental degradation.Ā
- Oceans are choking with plastic debris, endangering marine life.Ā
- Students must adopt sustainable habits like using cloth bags and steel bottles.
Ā 4. Microplastics in the Human Body:Ā
A particularly engaging part of the talk revolved around microplasticsāminute plastic particles that have now entered the food chain. Dr. Desai explained how these particles:
- Are ingested unknowingly through packaged food and water.Ā
- Can penetrate cells and potentially disrupt hormonal and neurological functioning.Ā
- Are being detected in human bloodstreams, raising serious health alarms.
Students actively participated through a Q&A session, asking insightful questions about how they could contribute as individuals. Inspired by Dr. Desaiās passionate appeal, many pledged to reduce plastic use and promote eco-conscious practices in school and at home.
Dr. Desai also briefly touched on the scope of career choices in the field of Environment. This educational talk successfully instilled a sense of environmental responsibility among the students. Through scientific facts Dr. Kamlesh Desai empowered young minds to become the change-makers of tomorrow. The session was brought to a close with a Vote of thanks by a student representative and presentation of a sapling to the resource persons as a token of appreciation.
